Golden Bead Subtraction, Montessori Math At Home

We've started working with 2 digit static subtraction, then 3 and 4 digit.
Xander started out making the minuend on his operations mat. The subtrahend was placed below.

I have seen children work from the 45 layout bank, but in our case Xander retrieved his numbers straight from the wooden number card boxes placed beside his mat.
He simply removed the subtrahend beads, and counted the remaining gold beads. He then moved them down below, and formed his answer. We eventually just started removing the beads that were subtracted from the mat, and counted the difference.

Then we moved on to dynamic subtraction (borrowing or regrouping). One exercise from our Montessori Research & Development Manuals is to introduce regrouping to use a minuend of 1000, and a subtrahend of 999, it really reinforces the concept of regrouping.  Xander thought it was pretty cool.
You can also check out the Montessori Primary Guide for some great instruction.

Static Subtraction below. At this point he recorded his problems, performed the subtraction and recorded the answer.

While this was going on Miss Ava worked with the hanging bead stair.

I hope you are all enjoying your Golden Beads!

  1. I like how you used the little wooden people for the division...we've just been using trays, the people are more fun.

    1. Thanks! We've had a lot of fun with our tiny "wooden" kids:))

  2. Ha! I didn't even realize until I just read this again...we did the same equation today, 1000-999!

  3. I've just found your blog. Tell me, are you from Ontario? Finding people from Eastern Canada using Montessori at home is *SO* hard to find!
I'm glad I've found your blog. Thanks for sharing!

    1. We are in Ontario!! Yes ...I have not found any home schooling in the Montessori Method and very few who are even familiar with it:( I'm sure they are all sick of my chitter about it:)) I just find it sooo hard to believe that it isn't used everywhere...I see so many struggling with things like "curriculum choices" and "learning styles". Montessori is such an amazing gift for any child.
I'm glad you found us too!!

  4. Wooden people instead of skittles and big
    beads! Genius!
