A Practical Guide to Montessori &

Home Schooling

Coming Soon!

Details to come!

I wish to thank all those who expressed interest and asked questions about our book that we are  working to release. This book has grown in scope and has taken far longer than I ever anticipated to complete.
The main reason for this is that I am trying to answer all of the questions I had early on, in a comprehensive and extremely visual, practical way.
I am working to cover the vast majority of Montessori materials from 0 -12.
Below are a couple of page examples from our Early Language Section.
This is one of two pages of the table of contents for Early Language.

The release date has been pushed off several times, and I so appreciate your patience. The book is surpassing 600 pages at this point, and is such an exciting project.

Who is this Book For?

This book is for people just like you and me! Montessori is interesting and well guarded by many, however the community is opening somewhat. I am not a Montessori Teacher. I'd been told on more than one occasion that no one should "administer" the method without qualification. I found this very sad, closed minded, self serving, and completely conflicting with my vision of the true self directed learning that happens in the home - not to mention the heart of Montessori.
I sought to understand as this is my nature, and I think many of yours. I am a former Program Coordinator and Director. I created meaningful programming for families, that fostered connection through the parent child relationship. I was part of a team of Directors who created an alternative Education Facility, for children and families in need of options. I have spent many years researching the method for my own pleasure, and love of Montessori. I have worked with most every material for nearly a decade in my own home, and have worked to create a large collection of print materials for my children. I've been asked countless questions that I've never had the time to really answer here, because well... I am just like any other home learning mama who is living and loving life, through all of it's diversity, challenges, and beauty.

This book is primarily targeted to homeschoolers, parents and students who wish to gain practical insight into the materials and philosophy and home schooling.
My goal is to bring you all of the information you need, and will offer DIY solutions and alternatives for many materials. We will answer the following questions about all materials. “What is (material) this material?” “What is the purpose?” Can I make this?”

The book will answer other practical questions to help you decide which materials will be practical to purchase for home use. We are covering 0-12 in effort to help those who are using Montessori for not only the beginning of the journey, but to help you understand the entire scope of each material and if it is also used later on down the road.

I chat at length about our experience in practically using these materials at home. What general ages we used materials and what worked for us, as well as what did not.

We are laying our the basic sequence for materials and answering all of the most commonly asked questions. We are sharing information about all of the extra materials, that are not offered with materials that are purchased online. We are chatting about organization and what it's like to create a Children's House at home.

This book also contains a great deal of detailed information about homeschooling in general, answering the most frequently asked questions and concerns of homeschoolers, and those they love who are struggling to understand the concept.
This book above all else is about freedom of choice, and a love of home learning in what ever form this may take in your home. This is not about imposing ideas or philosophies on others, but is wholeheartedly about celebrating the individuality of home life, children, and families. Thus we go very deep into the philosophy to help you understand in practical terms the holistic view of education that Maria Montessori had created, and also discuss the bigger picture in terms her view of societal impact on education.

While this book will provide the traditional use and information about Montessori materials, it will show you that all things can be affordably incorporated in whole or part by your family if you so choose. The intention of this book is to help you make Montessori yours, and at the end of the day, the best choice is one works for your family and children.

This book does not contain fluff, or busy work. This book is about living and enjoying life while incorporating this method. We truly live the philosophy that the world is our classroom, and this has taken our passion for learning to a completely different level.

We are not home learners because we had no alternatives or schools available.               We are home learners completely by choice.

Maria Montessori's own words speaking of the Children's House as written in her book, “Maria Montessori’s Own Hand Book

“It ought to be a real house ; a set of rooms with a garden. A garden with shelters because children can play or sleep under them, also bring their tables out to work under them. In this they may live almost entirely in the open air.”

~ Maria Montessori

I am excited to complete this project, and honestly there have been times that I have doubted I could find the needed time to finish. We are a busy family like most other families, and our children are involved in many different activities and have a huge range of self chosen and directed interests. I have chosen to stick with it because I so hope to reach any who were in the place that I was when I started. There are more resources available now than ever, and while it is amazing it's also as confusing as it ever was.

***UPDATE*** The book has been created in sections and I am debating on the format for release as well. I am completing section that I have had the most questions about first. For now I am completing all sections including:

  • Montessori Basics
  • Homeschooling Basics
  • Montessori Baby & Toddler
  • Early Language
  • Elementary Language
  • Early Math
  • Elementary Math
  • Practical Life
  • Sensorial
  • Geography
These two sections will come a bit later.
  • Botany
  • Zoology

We will offer the first 10 sections together as one book. This book will be offered at a discounted rate until the two final sections are added at which point it will increase with these additions. Those who purchase the entire book early, will receive the last two sections for free when they become available.

Due to the number of requests we will offer both Math and Language as a separate offering.

You all will be the first to know when it is ready, stay tuned!!

Much love and many thanks to you all, and to those who have asked for more information.

We wish you all a wonderful  beautiful year of home learning, fun, and joy with your families!

Stay Tuned!
If you have questions about the book please ask!

  1. I can't see how you do it all!! I have one child and though I've dipped my toe into homeschooling her at primary level it was beyond me - to know where to 'begin'...I am still hoping to homeschool for Elementary -so the Geography course would be fantastic! I wish I had whatever you have - to figure out how to do it all! ...please share your secrets! (It's not just about the materials). Which manuals are you using...?

    1. It would not be truthful if I told you it was all easy. We completely follow our children's interests, and it's incredible where that has taken us as a family. We do love Montessori and it has certainly become a great passion for me, especially in terms of extracting what works for our children. Our manuals are from Montessori Research and Development, however since we purchased ours many years ago the price has gone up. There are so many things I would have done differently, if I'd known more at the time. It is all of this research and time that I am trying to translate into our book. This goes far beyond the materials. Our book covers a huge range of topics about home schooling. I so hope to publish it soon. Keep in mind that our blog has well over six years of life and experiences documented. None of what you see here happened overnight. In reality we share on the blog only a small portion of our life. We also juggle the needs of our daughter who was diagnosed with Urea Cycle Disorder at 3.5yrs, so there are many things that we carry and work with daily. Truly just begin where you can. Do what you can, most importantly spend time with your kids and help cultivate their interests. Answer their questions, and enjoy these precious young years.I appreciate your writing to me so very much. Thank you!

  2. I am wondering if the book will be giving more details on how to build your own materials (i.e. sizes of the finished grammar solids, etc). I really like the info you give on your website and my husband is determined to make all our own materials and so I am looking for more help in how to do that.

  3. Yes! The book is literally brimming with DIY options and details. You are most welcome to comment anywhere here as well and ask anything you like as well.

  4. I guess this is a silly questions but .... do you have a release date?

    1. Not at all!! I wish I had a date for you! I have added more information above to help answer this question. I am hoping to have more information as to release in the next month. Thank you for asking!

  5. Hi Cherine, just read the comment before mine and was wondering if there is news about the book? Sorry, i done want to pressure, but i am so interested :)
    Have a great weekend!

  6. Hi Elizabeth! No pressure I really appreciate your interest in the book, and letting me know! I am in the process of finishing a few sections, and the editing process has begun. The book is very large surpassing now 600 pages. I will update shortly as to where we are at. Thank you so much for asking <3 Have a great weekend as well!!

  7. I'm very excited to see this! Our family will be homeschooling beginning with my 2.5 year old. We are working aggressively on a debt pay off plan so the DIY ideas for Montessori materials are of great interest to me!

    1. I am happy you found us!! We were in great need of solutions when we started out as well, and making many materials was a must due to the expense. I am considering releasing sections of the book as they finish editing to get it out sooner. I will post on the blog here though, and you all will be the first to know what we decide to do <3 Thank you so much for writing <3

  8. Hi Cherine,I really love your website and all the work you do with your children, very inspirational. I've heard about Montessori for the first time about three years ago and I think it's great! I do have a question if you could help me with or advise, do you think I can start Montessori home schooling my two children at the age of 5 and 8? I really would like to do that but I don't know where to start.
    Thank you

    1. I think you can start whenever you wish! I am hoping to have my book out very shortly and it lays out everything in terms of materials, philosophy, adaptations, and a huge amount of information to help you decide what will work for you. I will post as soon as it's available, and in the meantime we spent our time following the interests of our children and plugging in materials. It's an amazing journey to be enjoyed <3

    2. Thank you, looking forward to reading your book!!
