Montessori Golden Bead Addition, When To Introduce It?
This is a question I am asked often. Speaking for us and our home experience at home, I really do not have a definitive answer. Our children were interested in numbers off and on with great excitement. While we were always talking about and using numbers in our daily living, it was during those times of heightened excitement that they were incredibly ready and eager, to work in greater detail with the Golden Beads.
I can say that both of our children had a solid base of linear counting and number recognition. They had been introduced to the Base Ten system of place value with the Golden Beads. They had spent a good deal of time creating values (choosing pre made number cards and building the values in golden beads on their place value mat), and reading the numbers. For a child who may be struggling with numbers and place value, the Golden Beads are such a fantastic tutoring tool.

What Are We Up To Now?
I am still working on our Making Montessori Ours Home school Book and several other projects.
I had questions about the method, materials, home schooling in general, unschooling everything!!
This book has been such a labour of love and I hope that it will be helpful!
So far it is close to 400 pages long, so it is a great deal of work to bring together.
BUT more on that later!
Ava is moving along at her own pace to her own very special tune. She loves everything about traditional materials.
As many of you may know and some may not - Ava was diagnosed with Urea Cycle Disorder when she was 3.5 yrs of age. This has brought many additional challenges to the table. It is an ever evolving part of our life that we move and adapt our daily flow to manage. The greatest challenge by far for us with Ava has been eating. So far though things while not always smooth she has remained stable and safe. We have new challenges coming in terms of a new medication, and closely monitoring her needs as she grows and develops. She has an amazing Doctor and Nutritionist that have followed her from the beginning, and are beyond amazing at hearing us and including our input as her parents to try and incorporate this knowledge into her overall care model.
The most exciting thing though is that she is active, engaged, extremely social (as is her brother) and so beautifully creative. Ava is taking on the world in her own beautiful way.

Canadian & American Money Unit & Printables
We purchased a Canadian currency dedicated play set, because in order to carry out most of the Montessori games/work it requires a fair amount of money. The play set was far more practical to have on hand and ready to go. In order to complete the 45 layout in money you may require two set or add in additional printed play money.
We do have a set of real coins for use with 3 part cards and also 45 real pennies for counting out in our money spindle boxes and number cards.

This work is introduced in Elementary Biology Level 2 - Part 1&2 Manuals from Montessori Research and Development in case you are interested. Part 1 looks at Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells. It still lists Archaea under the Bacteria Kingdom which has now been classified into it's own Kingdom, as well Protista & Fungi. In part 2 you will look at the Plant & Animal Kingdoms and cells. You can look at a full table of contents on their site. This work follows all of your earlier animal and plant work - Zoology & Botany.

Montessori Six Kingdoms Complete Printable Charts, and Activities
This manual set has two volumes part 1 & 2. Part 1 looks at Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells, Fungi, Protista, Bacteria and it still lists Archaea under the Bacteria Kingdom, which has now been classified into it's own Kingdom.
In part two you will look at the Plant & Animal Kingdoms and cells. All of our visits to the zoo, botanical gardens, nature walks and discoveries that our children have made, created a base of building blocks for this work.

Place Value with Montessori Golden Beads
I thought I would share some of her place value number practice today. I have a set of cards I've prepared with color coded numbers ranging from 2 to 4 digits. I started out by giving her 2 digit cards and she chose the numbers that she wanted to create.

Addition - Montessori Teen Hanging Bead Frame
For those who may not be familiar with these frames - there are two hanging bead frames. The first is a frame with hooks for hanging one bead stair set from 1 - 9. Once Ava was comfortably placing and labeling the 1-9 stair, I introduced the Teens Frame. The Teens Frame features numbers 11-19.

Fun Crochet Projects To Make For Kids
She LOVES Peppa Pig so I thought I would give a small set of dolls a go for her! There are tutorials online to make these and I checked out a couple to get the idea. It is super simple and I winged it on my own after getting the basic idea.
This winter has been super busy, but I have found some time to create a few fun things mainly for Ava.

Welcome!
Hi there! I'm the author and creator of Making Montessori Ours. We are a busy home learning family sharing our favourite learning resources, road trips and travel, crafty fun, home diy projects, sewing, and tons more! I am not as active in posting about our children as they have grown, and their interests are their own. When they give permission I shall create posts that include them. Our interests as a family continue to grow, and we share our news and daily updates on Facebook and Instagram, if you wish to catch up with us there please do! As requested I will continue to develop materials and products for our shops, as I love the creative process. There are so many things that our children loved that I would love to share. For those who have been with us for many years we thank you! For those who are new to us we welcome you!
In the spirit of transparency ~ We are an amazon affiliate. If you click on any amazon link on this site and make a purchase (at no cost to you) we receive a small sum. It's important that you know!
Thanks for stopping by!
