Kids in the Kitchen - Making Pizza and Free Kids Apron & Hat PDF Sewing Pattern

I love making pizza with kids it is fun and super easy! Our kids are working in the kitchen with us everyday in some capacity.

Pizza is a huge favourite in our house, as I know it is in many.
This was a pizza for lunch kinda day!
Ava was wearing a little chef hat & apron I made for Xander when he was three for Halloween, she just loves it!
I am sharing a free PDF printable pattern, and tutorial on how to make the hat & apron set at the bottom of the post!

This is a simple pizza dough that we make in our stand mixer with the dough hook. If you don't have a stand mixer this dough is easily brought together by hand.
Ava helps measure everything out into the bowl and whisk together. I add the "tap hot" water.
She runs the mixer by the number of clicks I ask her for, with the start lever.

We coat the dough with olive oil and let it rise for about 20 min, I just keep an eye on it.
Ava is rolling it out on a sheet pan with olive oil.
Many times though it's easier and more fun to spread out by hand.

Ladling on the sauce - this one is plain tomato sauce (you can see all of our practical life activities at work here).
Sometimes we use sun dried tomato pesto or basil pesto and a huge variety of toppings, but today for these guys it was a good dose of mozzarella cheese and Parmesan.

If you want to try the recipe here it is!
We use a regular sized cookie sheet,
but you can use what ever you like.
1- batch will make a "thin" crust cookie sheet size pizza,
but can be a bit tricky to spread out.
If you prefer a thicker crust double it!
If you don't have a stand mixer with a dough hook - work this by hand.
Preheat Oven to 400/200C
1 1/2 Cups Flour
1 Package of Quick Rise Yeast
1/4 Teaspoon Salt or to taste
1 Teaspoon Sugar
1/2 Cup of "Tap Hot" Water
I put the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast into the mixer and whisk it up.
I add half the water and mix for a second, and then add the rest. Sometimes it needs a little more water.
I try not to mix it for long, and a dough on the wet side usually works well for us. I get olive oil on my fingers and remove it from the hook - coat with more oil and leave it in the bowl to rise.
I put my bowl in the microwave, and let it sit there for about 20min - but eye it till it close to doubles.
Spread and top it with all your favourites!!
Bake for 15-20 min depending on thickness of crust, but until it is golden brown and your cheese is caramelized. You can also lift the corner of the crust with a spatula to check and see if it's golden.
That's it!!
We love this recipe. Let me know it you like it! I was excited to get it because it is so fast and yummy and the dough doesn't have that "yeasty" taste to it.
One more fun thing to pass along is my first PDF Sewing Pattern!!
The pattern includes the Little Chef Hat & Apron that Ava is wearing.
You can customize this however you like!
If you cut two apron pieces you can stitch them together and make a reversible apron!!
When you print the pattern
please
do not use the shrink to fit setting on your printer (click NONE), or it will not print to scale.
This pattern is hand drawn and not perfect, but is completely functional.
Cut out all of your pieces and tape them together to make a complete pattern.
The "poof" on the top of the hat is smaller (I like it this way) BUT if you would like a larger one add 2" to the cut line.
This pattern is super easy and adaptable.

I used two pretty cotton complementary fabrics for this set.

I make sure my fabric is ironed, it makes the cutting and sewing so much easier.

Cutting the barrel of the hat on the fold.

Cutting the poof for the top of the hat. Again, if you want a large poof add 2'' to the cut line.

Miss Ava working away...

I added a piece of heavy cotton fabric between the layers of my hat barrel to give it more weight to stand up better. You can also use a stiff interfacing - I used what I had on hand this time.

I cut out the pocket, turned the edges and ironed them down. I stitched the pocket first.

Pinned the stitched pocket down.

Top stitched the pocket to the apron.

Below is the barrel of the hat (inside) with a simple zigzag stitch to clean up the inside (side seam of the hat).

I pinned the top"poof" in place first.

I hand gathered and stitched in place. This is a quick but non perfect method. You can also use a gather pull stitch to gather the fabric more precisely - I was happy to do it this way.

I did not make ties for this apron, but used grosgrain ribbon instead. I used about 16" for each tie on the neck and about 20 each for the waist - you can adjust this for your child or simply cut off the access if it's too long - better to go longer though.

I double stitched the ties on for durability.
