Geology For Kids, Museum Geology Class For Kids

I chatted a bit here about geology classes for our home school group at Miller Hall Geology Museum at Queen's University Kingston Ontario.

The classes were  wonderful, and packed with information presented in a fun kid friendly very interactive way, with lots of samples of rock and fossils for the children to see and touch!!

Program 1.
Description from the site...
Dinosaurs - An introduction to fossils and palaeontology, with emphasis on dinosaurs. Children get to see and touch a variety of bone and tooth casts, and real fossils including a real dinosaur bone fossil.

Xander dressed as a Palaeontologist!!! This was a fun part of of the presentation - talking about all of the basic  tools and equipment a palaeontologist would have on site.

The children viewing a dino foot imprint fossil!!

This was a great presentation and description of the field of palaeontology. Talking about identification and location of dinosaur fossils. As well lots of other general dino information, and lots of specimens to view including "real" dino egg fossils!

This is the dino fossil dig area that the kids explored when the program concluded.

We have been taking many trips over the last several months that work into our exploration of the Great Lessons.
For those who may not be familiar - Maria Montessori created the 5 Great Lessons to be presented  in the first year of Montessori Elementary and then presented again in following years.
The first Great Lesson being: 1st Coming of the Universe and the Earth,  2nd Coming of Life, 3rd Coming of Human Beings, 4th Communication in Signs, 5th The Story of Numbers.
We are in the heart of the first 3.  I will detail what we have been up to, and the materials and books we are using in a future post.

Program 2.
As per their site...
Introduction to Geology - Learn about geology - the study of the Earth, during this engaging introduction to the various aspects of the science. An interactive overview of rocks, minerals, fossils and Earth processes illustrated with many touch samples (including a meteorite, a dinosaur bone, examples of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and mineral ores) that are circulated around the group.

This was a great presentation because every rock and type that was discussed, had a great specimen to be explored to go with it!  He touched on Geology on the whole, and the importance.  They learned about materials we use in our everyday lives created from rocks and minerals.  He touched on plate tectonics, and formation of rocks and minerals.

This is a beautiful Museum in a historic stone building filled with beautiful examples of rocks, minerals, fossils, and so much more to discover.
This was a pleasure to experience with our children.
